Garbage Vulture --- 12 years ago -

Garbage Vulture. So ive been on here a few days and made a few comments. I guess introductions are in order. I was named Garbage Vulture a few years back while at Fort Lewis because of a nack for finding bargains and making a few bucks from it. I attend yard sales, Auctions, and buy internet items to resell in order to make enough money so the wife does not have to work. That way she can raise our children our way and not the way some childcare wants to. I started teaching others what I do so they get out of debt even with an Army paycheck. We will arrive at Riley From Leonard Wood on the 17th and sign for our house on the 20th in Forsyth. If you know of Auctions in the area please let me know. I will quickly list about 40 items on RYS. I am a serial "Flagger" and hate postings that dont follow the rules, especially puppies. I often enjoy a few beers and write sarcastic comedy on the UG. Dont get offended im not picking on any one person, its a conglomerite of past expieriences. Also, dont send me "INFO" on who does this or that, Im not in on the gossip circle and dont care to be. Once we have unpacked, I will have a yard sale. Come by and meet me, in the morning for coffee and in the pm for beers. Greetings

That's pretty awesome! I love thrift stores and great finds. I know Whel's in Ogden does auctions. I think that's the name. They do auctions certain days and have a store. When we lived in Manhattan the storage place at the end of our street did an auction like three times during the year. Probably for people not paying rent. Reminded me of Storage Wars. Love that show! Welcome!

I use to go to the Wehl uction Time auctions regularly. They have some decent stuff if you know what you are looking for and the price you can get. There is a lot of deceptive items there, so be careful what you bid on and what they say. I bought some "silver" flutes and paid a nice penny, only to figure out they were silver-plated brass. I have also gotten stuff that was missing parts or pieces, like I bought a bed. But when i went to load it the headboard was not included....so I got the footboard and rails...money right in the trash and I had to dispose of it. The place is crowded with stuff and it is difficult to see some items fully. I have not been there since they moved to Odgen. If you know your stuff you should do fine, but they will not "lower" a price to get rid of it. For example, they will auction a wii system (which you have no idea if it works) and nobody bids, you offer a price and they will not accept it or even consider it. There is also a hidden "auction tax" on what you buy, a percentage of your total cost. I have been mostly diappointed in my purchases from there and either ended up with junk, wasted my time and money, or was able to resell it to barely break even if that.

Honestly, your best bet is to go driving around post on certain trash days and pick up stuff people put out. You can find some pretty decent stuff, so it is free to you and all profit and may just take a little time and effort.

I have done some storage auctions here, but since those shows came out on TV the prices have gone through the roof. A $300 locker will go for $1K and there is no visible profit margin. It is always the same people there and I do know several of them have thrift stores in the area or run auction houses of their own, some seem like an inside job IMO. I have yet to buy a locker here and I have been here 3 years. I have bought more than a dozen before in other places. Oh yeah, the lockers I have seen have all obviously been "pre-picked." Your best bet is to talk to a property manager at some of the storage places and let them know that you would take the locker off of their hands before they consider calling an Auctioneer. It saves them money and time and some of them are willing.

The Master Sergeant I used to work with said as soon as he retired, he was going to be "The Junk Man"; everyone even called him that. Finally my curiosity got the best of me and I asked him what that meant. He told me that when he retired from the Army, he was going to be a junker. I thought it was so interesting.

For one, junking saves things from taking up space in landfills. Two, I believe that our country has a tendency to be unnecessarily wasteful; I believe in free enterprise, but it also saddens me to see furniture, vacuum cleaners, etc, in dumpsters--especially when most of the time the items are in good condition or just need minor repairs.

I am not proud; if I see something groovy on a curb, I will hop out of my car, knock on a person's door, ask if I can have it, and throw it in my trunk, lol.

purplewave.com I think is the address for purple wave auctions out of manhattan. I haven't been in years but they used to have really good deals.
I know there are auctions almost every saturday at the Senior Citizens center on Spring Valley Road in Junction City. Haven't been there in years either, lol but again they were good when I went.
