I currently live in Warrner peterson and for the last 2 months, my family have been surring with headaches, difficulty breathing, my 3 month old has been coughng whichs chokes her and I have taken them to the Doctors numerous times to be seen for there symptoms. As of last week the Doctor did not want me to take the children back into the home until we figured out what was wrong with the house. I go to the hoousing office and they tell me I can get out of my lease but they dont have any housing available. I know that's not true because of all the soliders moving in and out and all the new houses there building.

notsue --- 12 years ago -

I'm sure they are assigning houses to people as soon as they become available and thats how they can get away with saying theres nothing available. However, I would press the issue and make them put you on the list and keep bugging them until you get moved.

Have your Dr. write a formal letter about how he believes your housing situation is responsible for your health and indicate some of the long-term exposure effects. Your daughter is at most risk because she has an immature immune system and she can have life-long ailments (like Asthma or other pulmonary issues) that will plague her because of the situation. If they do not give you immediate attention and make something available for you, I would take my own initiative and choose what is best for you and your family, especially your baby, and get out of there....like this weekend! Just document everything well, perhaps get an environmental health inspector to do a run through of the hazards (if they are apparent) and you will later have something to fall back on in case you need it. Demand to get on the emergency list for housing, I know they have one because were were on it for 3 days and they got us right into a place. There are no excuses, you just need a letter from the Dr and perhaps a person in the chain of command to call housing and demand you get keys to a different place.

Even with a formal letter housing won't do anything trust me I fought them for 2 years. I have asthma, allergies, auto immune disease and other things. My kitchen was FULL of black mold and they only wanted to paint over it, you could put your fingers through the dry wall. I had letters after letters from my dr and all 3 of my specialists, plus EFMP was trying to work with housing. Only thing housing would say was we can let you out go your lease. I went to my COC, IG, post commander, emailed John Picerne ... Nothing. The post healt inspector did force them to fix the black mold in the house but I was displaced at MY expense for 10 days because their guest housing was filled. I was put on 9 new meds while living there

Letting you go from your lease is 1) a copout and 2) an easy way to release them from liability.

The hospital on-post does have an Environmental Health and Industrial Hygiene staff--but you'd be hard-pressed to get any of them to come and do air-quality testing (or any other) testing for you unless it was directed by the right person/persons.

What I would personally do: get the air quality testing on my own dime. I know it could be expensive, but if it's for your family's health it's worth the price. If the results come back with any issues at all, supply Picerne with your findings and tell them that you expect to be moved to new quarters (at their expense) and that you also expect that home to be shut down and not issued to any other soldier's family until it is given the green light to do so by a qualified industrial hygiene or environmental health specialist. If they balk? I'd go the legal route. I would normally suggest going to IG, the Post Commander, etc--but unfortunately, the Army sold their soul to the devil when they privatized housing, so many times their hands are tied when it comes to dealing with them. It may not hurt to go that route just to say you did (so you can have all your ducks in a row), though.

Also (this is extreme, but): have you considered going to the media? The soldiers at Walter Reed who had black mold, asbestos, etc, in their rooms complained and were ignored too until they got the news involved.

Either way, don't just move and put a financial and emotional burden on yourselves, with Picerne being able to get away with it. Lean on them. Sue. Go to the media. Just don't let them get away with it. It's sad to think that they'd be so heartless but unfortunately, it's true.

Around yr 2000 they began moving residents due to black mold. I got black mold in my skin. My doctor noted it and we were moved in a 72 hour period.
They also had a family loose a one yr old to the black mold. The entire family was effected.
What you may be able to do is a search on it. It was at fort irwin california. And if you can take that article and a letter from your doc. I highky doubt that housing here wants to relive what housing there had to go thru.
I can tell you still to this day a horrible rash will appear on my back at times. And the doctors said that i will have to live with it happeneing for the rest of my life.
There are a couple of people here right mow that was at irwin at the same time i was. And all of us had black mold somewhere.

tmmundy, CRAP--we were there at the same time! Do you remember what housing area it was? We were in the older units; not the super-old brick ones that were torn down, the other fourplexes near CJL Elementary School. Crap.

I didnt read through every ones comments. But Who ever said have your dr write a note i would. Then i would not take it to your neighborhood office i would take it to the main housing office. I know you can be moved out of a house because of the house giving your issues. When i lived there my neighbor 2 houses was moved because of black mold. And when i got into it with my neighbor i asked to be moved and they said the only way i can be moved is if there is something seriously wrong with the house such as black mold or something. So yes it can be done idk who you talked to but i would get the note from the dr and go straight to the MAIN housing office. If you still get no where then i would get the unit involved, jag or if you get no where with main housing, unit and/or jag maybe even get IG or post commander involoved. No way if i i were you i would give up!!(that was warren i lived in and that was WArrens housing office that told me that.)

The ones by elementary school were ok. The ones over on muese argon. Were infected badly.

tmmundy2 --- 12 years ago -

By law if you can prove black mold they have no choice. And the housing will push you around if you dont present health codes, legal issues that xan arise.
Also, they had to jave specialist come in and clean my furniture. And what couldnt be cleaned they had to replace.

I have rented homes for many years of my life, and one thing that I do know. If someone, say a doctor, has never actually been in the home, there is no way that they can speculate that a home is causing a problem. For them to write a letter and say that, without looking at the home, would be ethically wrong. Though there are sometimes issues, very few mold problems are actually "black" mold. Though mold does make breathing conditions worsen if you have them, most mold issues can be cleaned up and resolved easily and correctly. Most people just jump the gun on what is causing them problems, and how bad things in their home may be.

tmmundy2 --- 12 years ago -

Unfortunatlly in most cases with military housing the issue has been black mold. I have lived in the military jousing for 20 yrs and they dont always take care of issues they hide them.
As far as doctor and ethics. They are doctors on post, so dealing with home issues. Thwy pretty much already know.
I had to go thru testing on my skin. And army doc already knew what it was. Way before the civilian doc did.

True. I used to live up by the teen center; upon having Picerne maintenance come out to assess the black mold spots on our ceiling back in 2007, the gal told me, "oh, it's no big deal; we'll paint over it when you PCS out". Yeah, no. We moved out soon there after.

I mean no disrespect, but living two years in a mold ridden home with not one but likely two tax refund periods to assist you, pay to get out.

When I chose to relocate from an apartment onto post, I paid to break my lease so I could move my family into a bigger residence. Naturally, two weeks later, my spouse had orders cut to Afghanistan. Did I lament over still having to pay the break in lease after that? No. I always say when you want something done right, you do it yourself. Now, living in Forsyth, I will again pay to move my family into a new home we purchase in the new year. Hopefully, the last move in a very long time span.

Missthe80s congrads on your new home. I hope you love it for many years to come.
We bought a house last year while ww were home. Getting ready for retirement. Cant wait.
But when we bought it they hadnt actually lined up a new home yet. So we decided to rent it to them. They had been looking for a new family home but to this date uet still hadnt found anything.
The man,who is staying there has offered to do some fixer up things for us. But i told my hubby. That i wanted to do myself. Not to be mean but i get way less crabby if its my own mess,up. Lol....

I hope the lady having the moldy houss issues gets it fixed soon.
Maybe u could do an emergency loan if u can prove health issues. They may evwn give it to u in a grant form.
My husband had a female soldier who got a er loan that she didnt have to,pay back.
I am not sure of all details about,it. But i think ot was for a move. I can ask.
