Does anyone know why the post movie theater is closing? I was so sad to see the sign saying they will be showing their last movie at Barlow theater on the 3rd of Mar. =(

tmmundy2 --- 12 years ago -

No I did not even know we had a theater working on post. Where is it???? Dang I need to start to get out more...I swear..First the chapels now the theater..

Barlow theater is on the hill a little past the bowling alley. The only catches are they can only show one movie at a time, you have to wait 2-4 weeks after it is released, and they only show movies Fri-Sun. They showed Rise of the Guardians today @ 2 and will be showing The Guilt Trip tomorrow @ 5:00. Admission is $5 for an adult 12+ and kids are $2.50 for ages 6-11, 5 and under are free. I am so sad they will be closing. I am hoping it's because they are going to build a newer one, but I doubt it.

No new theater, its closing because there is no money to keep it open. Netflix and Hulu have done them in.

I figured it has to be something like that. I can say my family is gonna miss it.

This breaks my heart! We go all the time :(
Nowhere else can kids for 5 go free and you get to collect a free combo buy having your card stamped. If you are a large family you end up getting it each time you go! Ughhh

Jezzz seems like because we are all so close to town and civy life that we don't really use the post places much...I kinda feel like a traitor now. Sounds strange but I do. If more of us would have used what was available to us on post then we wouldn't be loosing it. I know I am the worlds worste I run to walmart insted of commy or px...Maybe next time I will think of the amount of money I am saving on gas just going down the hill instead of to town. When you think about it..I would actually be spending the same amount really...I might get item cheaper at walmart but gas I paid to get there and back. May have caused that one item to be more really....Dang we can all say I am slow. Takes me awhile to catch on..I need a oxygen,,,,my brain cells are dying...lol

Darn, I was hoping to go there over the summer with my kids on those 100* days.

I can honestly say that I do 95% of my business here on post. I use post dr's for everything but dental exams, I always use the PX, commissary, and shoppette (I have not been to wally world in more than 3 years, I boycott that store!), I play bingo on post even though it is "cheaper" at some legion club in JC, I love the USO and all of the things they do for the kids and no dough dinners, I love the little parties at the library, I occasionally shop and do ate to the trift store (but the DAV one right out the gate is my favorite), I buy the occasional fast food meal on post because no way am I paying 10% sales tax to go out the gate, I love the parks and water parks and I travel to several different ones (IACH and Moon lake our my favorite), I love to go on picnics around here to many different places, I get my hair cut and my kids done at the salon at the old PX, I like the post office on quiet days ( but I frequent Odgen because there is never a line and wih two little inpatient ones I need that and the drive to look at the trains), I use the neighborhood center for things, I use the community garden, I go to a lot of things at the Riley's conference center because something similar in manhattan or at kstate would be double or triple the price and I would probably not see people I know (plus it is nice to have child care in the basement), I rent things from outdoor rec so I can go and have fun in the summer, I love to frame my own pictures at the arts and crafts center, I use the services at ACS because they are convenient and they are accommodating and offer some amazing courses and services, I go to the gyms here and there, I like the cheap early week bowling (luncha and a game for my family on tuesdays for less than $10!), etc. Why not? Every penny I spend on post helps keeps the things around that I enjoy, is usually less expensive than shopping elsewhere or attending an event elsewhere, and is tax free.....at least a 9% savings!
This post is what you make of it and you get out of it what you want to, I like a lot of what it has to offer and I hope a lot of it stays. I have been on post where the PX is the size of our shoppette and the commissary is the size of the CDC. This place has so many more amenities and why not use it all to my advantage and support fair trade and USA pride?

Every other post we lived on I have gotten out and used everything there. But here I don't get out of the house often enough. I do a once a month trip to manhattan for a special doc there, topeka for my rumo, and then that is it. I only go to walmart rarely..Heck I think I leave my house maybe twice a month three tops. If I need something hubby or kid gets it for me when they get out...HAHA I guess I am a recluse..haha this makes me kinda worry I used to go go go...LOL
Oh Bri thank you so much for comming today to get those blocks. I greatly appreciated you taking them off my hands. Sorry I am a gibber gabber...LOL

Brianna --- 12 years ago -

Tmmundy......I wrote you a new prescription GET OUT MORE! You are vivacious, funny, and VERY happy....spread some of that around and leave a mark. You could be one of those "gram" people that goes to people's houses and offices just to spread some cheer, liven up their day, or embarrass them....and you do a silky act or something.

Thank you so much! You made my month! I will be back again:)

tmmundy2 --- 12 years ago -

Bri hahaha....I have the rocks piled up and ready to go also got something sitting on the side of the house that if you want you are more than welcome to.
I told my husband that I needed to get out more and he told me I had to get dressed first...HAHA
My husband says I am a little talker and I can talk the ear off someone in a heart beat haha....I told him knowing me when one of their ears fell off I just move to the other side and keep gabbin....hahaha

They are closing over 200 theaters around the country on military bases/posts.

Silverkitten (Mod) --- 12 years ago -

Funding cuts hurt places like MWR first. The army still needs equipment but they can do without fun things. It is sad, but what is even more sad is the lack of use by military family's. We have attended tons of things for our kids that we thought would be packed because it was free and fun. However 9 times out of 10 it's not very full because people just don't bother coming. When we were in Korea the movies were free at the theater. Most of the people would rather hit the Ville drinking and partying and spending $$$ than go to the theater.

We have been to the post theater many times, and nearly every time were seriously disappointed by something. It was usually freezing in there, even in winter months, and many times the projection was misaligned. Once, when going to see a rated PG movie that was really more like a G movie, they showed 3 previews for R rated horror films before the kids' movie. My young son was so scared that we had to take him outside and calm him down so that he would even be willing to stay for the feature film. We kept going back, hoping that the things we experienced were flukes, but it turned out not to be so. Let them close, or give it to some industrious and business minded moms to run it, and make it awesome.
