I have been cleaning out and getting ready to do the post wide garage sale, but I was wondering what prices you use for items. I did one two years ago and within two hours I was practically sold out. My prices were low, but people still tried to negotiate me to practically give things away. Do you inflate the price a bit and expect negotiations? Stay firm on prices? I am just curious. I am not trying to make a bunch of money, but I am not a goodwill either. I have been studying bookoo the past week to figure out prices on similar items, but I think the majority of prices are high. What rule of thumb do you use? Is anybody out there a garage sale pro and knows what a 'good' price is on items. I do not want to overprice and turn people away, but I do not want to practically give stuff away again.

notsue --- 12 years ago -

People will always try to negotiate... I price low so things will move quickly and I can get on to better things. You could start with one set of prices and then drop them after a number of hours to see if stuff will move better. Tho the biggest thing I've learned in my years is that the best business happens right after you first start. So early start, with an ad or signs and good prices will equal a happy day. Sometimes the people who come by first thing might come back later in the day if they are still in the area and they think you might be willing to work a better deal now, but waiting for that isn't good because they might find good deals elsewhere and spend all their money. If you have time for a two day sale you can try something day one, and something else day two to move things if they didn't move on day one.

I dont price my items, I guage their interest and ask a price I think I can get.(after a brief negotiation) But this is a business for me and I play it to make money. If your goal is to clean out the garage then price it low and take offers.

I have had alot of experience with yard sales, one thing I hear alot is people appreciate prices and have even had people tell me they don't like having to ask about things. I price a little high but not too high, I try to leave haggle room. My in laws had a yard sale a few weeks ago and sold mostly small items for $5 or less but still made over $400.

I have noticed a lot around here that some people think their used stuff is worth gold and price it at nearly new prices. I price things at the range to where if I were the customer I would buy it. I dont give it away for free but I dont try to price gouge either. You will always have people who think that because it is a yard sale you should negoatiate with them no matter the price.
On a side note, If there are no prices, I will not ask. I dont have time to play the price game. I also will not ask people if they will lower their price, I figure if thats what its marked then thats what they want for it and if its more then I want to spend then I just move on to the next sale.

I had a box full of items for a quarter, lady asked if I would take a dime.........

Brianna --- 12 years ago -

LOL. She must have been at my sale a few years ago.

I guess I will just price 70-80% off retail. I usually have a free box too. I never return anything to my house, so I load it up in my truck afterwards and donate, so my last hour I am ok making some money if nearly none on stuff.

Oh my gosh, Amen, sister.

Again, you are so right on. The part that kills me about the people who overcharge is that they wouldn't even dream of paying that price if they were buying the item from someone else. At the post-wide yard sale here at Carson last weekend, I got some ridiculously good deals from a man who was getting out of the Army and just wanted to clean out his storage. Well the guy in the duplex next door to him was an a-hole who was haggling people down to the penny. He had an old, beaten-up table that needed a ton of work for sale for $75. It wasn't antique and it wasn't a collector's item--as a matter of fact, it looked like he'd taken a regular pee on it for about 4 straight years. So one guy said that he was building a bench, he could use the legs on the table, and asked him if he would take $20. Trust me--that table wasn't worth 20 cents, much less 20 bucks...but the guy said "No." He told him he wouldn't take less than $65. So the man (calmly) asked him if he would pay $65 for that table in that condition if he was buying it from someone else and he said "yes". Boy, did he lie without blinking. There's no way he'd pay 65 bones for that crap.

I am on my way to OKC Monday night to pick up an auction lot I won, 4 pallets of stuff. Should be good for eBay and the post wide yard sale.

Brianna --- 12 years ago -

GV.....you rock! Hope you get some gems.

janiedoer --- 12 years ago -

I price items for what I would be willing to pay, not by what I think they are worth. I am not going to pay $10 for a pair of used jeans, regardless of brand, so I wouldn't expect others to pay that for a pair that I would sell.

armyngwife --- 12 years ago -

i went to a yard sale yesterday and saw they had some board games. boxes were damaged, so i figured, maybe cheep? NOPE! Wanted $10 each for them. *i lived without them*

I found a lady yesterday with kids board games...all pieces, one wasnt even opened for 2 a piece. I snagged them...lol. But I was also looking for clothing...found some. I saw people pricing clothing at 10 dollars for a pair of jeans with holes in them.

armyngwife --- 12 years ago -

wow! you scored big time! WTG!

Garbage Vulture --- 12 years ago -

I scored a Gently Used Bow-Flex with leg attachment for $52, Didn't sell much though Only $25 worth of stuff. But eBay did a good day shipped 4 items. Any ideas on getting rid of 80,000 plastic lids for to-go cups, they were in my last auction lot

notsue --- 12 years ago -

I'd donate them to a school or a children's museum... I remember the one in Houston and San Jose taking donations of all kinds of weird random crap like that because they used it in the crafts room where kids were able to make whatever the heck they could dream up with the crap available.

You know I looked for ya Garbage Vulture over in New Forsythe...Never did make it to ya...lol. It was crazy land over there. We were trying to get my friend fully into labor...didnt work, but she got 4 boxes of baby girl clothing for super cheap.

I only went to a few yard sales in McClellan. Most were decently priced. A majority of the stuff seemed like junk though. I really wish they would take a huge parking lot, like the Conference Center and have everyone sell their things there. Kind of like a flea market. That way everything isn't so spread out.

Brianna --- 12 years ago -

LL824...I have always thought the same. Make it like an outdoor flea market. At least there would be traffic control and all sales would be more accessible. I had someone trying to get to mine for an item and it took them 45 minutes to make their way through the Forsyth traffic. It would eliminate all of the drive by lookers who pay no attention to the road or people. One of these years a person will get hit. People run out between cars and are difficult to see. There were two cars who side swiped one another on the next street over from me.

LovMySoldier --- 12 years ago -

I have been here 3 years and have said it every time that it needs to be held as a flea market style. When we were stationed at Fort Will they had their post wide sales at 4700 building on post and people were still allowed to have them at their house also. But it sure did help a lot and it was fun because you could actually see more stuff instead of spending half the morning driving around and praying you don't run someone over

They did it this way on Fort Lee, and they used to do it at Fort Irwin (though I don't know if they still do). There was ample parking, tables were only $15 to rent, and it was a lot less hassle.

janiedoer --- 12 years ago -

When we were in Germany, they had a Trunk Sale! It was in a parking lot, only card allowed were those that got there during set up, to sell their stuff. When it opened, no vehicles were allowed to park in that area.aling it easy to browse everyone's stuff!

janiedoer --- 12 years ago -

Cars, not card. Damn autocorrect!

LovinLife824 --- 12 years ago -

Who schedules the post wide yards sales? I may have to put in an ICE suggestion.

Garbage Vulture --- 12 years ago -

MWR and Garrison Schedule them
