Has anyone had any issues with ticks lately? I have taken two of them of our fur baby within the last couple of weeks. She's still a pup so she only goes out for potty breaks. I noticed two more the other day on the sidewalk while my daughter was playing on the back patio. So as of now I don't let her play in the grass since obviously that's where there coming from. Will housing send someone to treat the yard or at least the patio area or am I allowed to do it myself? This is our first time in housing so not sure of the do's and dont's. thanks

Ticks seem to be pretty bad this year! Other than drenching everyone in deet, there really isn't much that you can do! Just keep checking and removing them promptly and properly! My hubs did land nav. a few weeks ago and had over 15 on him! Welcome to Ft. Riley!

The ticks are thick this year. You can treat your yard. I like a product called Seven, it seems to keep lots of the bugs away.

they are horrible every year I've been here... I cannot go out without spray on anymore unless I want to go thru the hassle of doing a tick check. Really giant ones at moon lake, and tiny micro ones at Milford lake... fun times.

Thanks for the all the info!
I never really seen or had to remove any ticks before now. I just figured it was a tick because it was sorta fat and just sitting there and not crawling or jumping like fleas. Now fleas... Seen and dealt with those pain the butts while I stayed at my parents last year. They live in TX and that summer they were really bad. My dad had to do like 3 treatments. I had to google how to remove them. So I found a pair of old tweezers and removed it then put it in a small jar of alcohol and dap the site with alcohol. So I hope that's right! I just found it bizarre that they were crawling around on the patio so I just stepped on them and told my kiddos stay out of the grass. My little ones hate when I have to remove a splinter or treat a cut. So I can just imagine how they would react to sit still so I can remove a tick! Is that product you mentioned save for kids and pets? Thanks again for all the help!

Seven is a poison the package says its safe for kids and pets after the first watering of the lawn. We use flea and tick gel on the dogs also.

They are really bad every year. I've pulled a few off our dogs in the past couple weeks. It doesn't help that they aren't mowing the lawn regularly. Our backyard looks like a jungle. We're considering just doing it ourselves, since it's growing too quickly.

Aw man, ticks give me the willies. Before we moved to the city we lived in a rural area that was rife with them.

pulled one off the kiddo yesterday so they are out there

There is a good organic granular treatment available at Home Depot. We use it and it is safe for pets. It smells strongly when you put it out, but it's not a chemical smell really - more like tea tree oil / eucalyptus. It doesn't kill the ticks, but will drive them out of your yard. It's in a white bag, and costs around $13. Typical bag will treat an average post fenced in yard about 4x. We treat every two weeks or after a super heavy rainfall. Seems to be working, when we first moved in a month ago we were picking several a day off our pooches even though they are on Frontline.

The yard length definitely doesn't help. Is this typical of their yard service here? Seems to me they should be cutting it shorter than 6 inches to begin with, but by the time they get to our yard it's almost a foot long! We just moved into ellis heights in April and we have never lived on post before, so I am not sure what's normal.

During the summer you let it go longer than you do other times of year.

Thanks for all the input! I'm willing to try anything. We don't have a fenced yard but I don't allow my little ones to play beyond the pole of the privacy fence so it's not a huge area. Guess I'm just a chicken when it comes to bugs in stuff but I couldn't imagine having to remove a tick from my babies. Lol. Heck I hate taking splitters out but I know it has to be done. I wanted to buy something yesterday but the hubby says he doesn't think we should because then it'll just get back tracked in the house. Guess time will tell.
This may be a little off topic but do you guys know if housing would be willing to remove a bush or the bushes they have by the front doors. We have
three that attract wasp/bees and being right by the front door we have to make a run inside so they don't get in to the house. I noticed that some neighbors have like shrub bushes or no bushes at all. Ours seem to be the only one that gets big and have little pink flowers that attract them. So now we cant really sit out front very long before 3-5 start flying around.
Thanks so much for the help.

They might because of the pest problem... usually they wont, but I could see an exception being made. When I had one I just did everything I could to kill it so they'd have to remove it.

Oh, and as far as taking the kids out, or going out myself, I spray deet stuff on our clothes (instead of on our skin) and its enough to keep things away. I'll spray our shoes and pant legs if wearing pants... I don't like having that stuff actually on me even tho its safe... I hate sunscreen/sunblock also.

I have one part of my yard, near our privacy fence, where the weeds are at least three feet tall. The grass gets so tall that I have a hard time finding dog waste. I go out every 2-3 days to pick it up and it's like hide and seek.

Definitely get the higher deet spray. We carry it everywhere, in the trunk for outings, in our house, in bags, everywhere. We get bit by mosquitoes like crazy and the higher deet works amazingly!

JPaint21 --- 12 years ago -

Permethrin is better repellant for ticks than Deet. You don't spray it on your skin though, just clothes, like shoes and pants. It's much more effective with ticks.

Correction, the grains im talking about are called 'Sevin' not Seven.
